Bad Teachers

Thu, 04 Jan 2024 10:00:00 -0500

How do bad teachers affect our behaviors and abilities in school. I had a fifth grade teacher who murdered his disabled son before the year I spent in his classroom. He wasn’t apprehended until the year after his class and that is when he murdered his wife. Imagine how scary that guy was. -Dan

Nick had a teacher early on that was downright cruel and he ended up in her class again only a couple years later.

All teachers affect our lives, most for the good as they educate us through our learning years. Be cautious as some teachers aren’t educating but indoctrinating.

Pam Arnell And Remembering Those We Love

Thu, 28 Sep 2023 15:00:00 -0400

This week Nick and Dan are talking with Pam Arnell. Pam is the Executive Director for 22ZERO and a close friend. We join her in remembering her husband Jerome who was. a veteran and prankster of the highest order. We also discuss what you want to hear when you're grieving, and how Pam got involved with 22ZERO.

Dr. Arnell served on the State Advisory Council for the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network from 2004-2014. As part of her dissertation, Dr. Arnell completed an analysis on The Tennessee Strategy for Suicide Prevention based on the original National Strategies for Suicide Prevention.

Dr. Arnell became involved with 22Zero in March 2021, when the Giles County Fire and Rescue Squad assistant fire chief asked if she would be willing to go through the training. One of the reasons she was asked is that Dr. Arnell handles the critical debriefing for squad members and her mental health training. She was doubtful at first and said, “let me look at the website first. I have a certain way of handling the debriefings and am not a cookie-cutter type counselor (Arnell, 2021).” Once Dr. Arnell looked at the website and thoroughly researched the website, she said, “o.k. I will give it a try (Arnell, 2021).”

In April of 2021, Dr. Arnell went through the training process and was astonished at how well the program worked. “Due to my job, working with children/youth who have been abused, neglected and working with them with their trauma being in law enforcement for five years as a reserve deputy, a rescue squad member, childhood trauma, in addition to being married to a veteran; I am a believer of the process (Arnell, 2021).” Now, Dr. Arnell is involved with 22Zero/ Healing the Hero by analyzing data and assisting with publications. She has already successfully treated individuals that previously struggled with PTSD symptoms.

As of November 5th, 2022, Dr. Arnell became the Executive Director for 22Zero Follow Me, Inc. Dr. Arnell also provides marketing, speaking at conferences for 22Zero, providing co-training for the peer-to-peer coaches along with Dan Jarvis. As the Executive Director, Dr. Arnell is in charge of overseeing 22Zero Follow Me, Inc., business’s strategic vision and supervising business decisions to drive company growth for 22Zero. Dr. Arnell will be collaborating with the company’s leadership team, implementing strategic plans for the company’s development, and managing relationships with all stakeholders.

Dr. Arnell will also collaborate with the board of Directors of 22Zero to identify, create, and implement strategic plans to actualize business objectives effectively for all mission clients, coaches, and staff. Also, to identify, recruit, train and develop a talented team of coaches and employees. Dr. Arnell will monitor company operations and ensure employees and business practices comply with regulatory and legal requirements. In addition to developing the organizational culture and promoting transparency and collaboration throughout the 22Zero. Another role is to develop partnerships with company stakeholders, shareholders, industry regulators and other relevant parties and identify potential risks and opportunities within the organization and its environment to protect business interests. As part of the Executive Director, other tasks are to identify potential sources of investment and organize fundraising efforts while representing 22Zero, at social and corporate events in ways that strengthen 22Zero and communicate the company’s message, professionally, ethically and with strong values.

What You Don’t Learn in Med School With Chris Gibbs, MD

Sat, 23 Sep 2023 14:00:00 -0400

Nick and Dan interview Dr. Chris Gibbs, Dr.  of Internal Medicine and the Medical Director for 22ZERO.

Chris Gibbs, MD

My story starts as a young boy growing up on a farm in southern Georgia. I learned about hard work at an early age as my father was a farmer who worked sunrise to sunset every day of his life trying to provide for us. He told me early in my life that he didn’t want me to have to do the kind of hard manual labor that he did on a daily basis for the rest of my life. He wanted me to study hard and be some type of professional. I started thinking about my life plan as early as about 8 years of age.

I was sort of a sickly child who had frequent visits to our local pediatrician due to severe allergies, etc. Even though I hated going to the doctor, I always felt better afterwards. It was at this point in my life that I decided that I wanted be the person who made people feel better! This led me down the path to medical school and I graduated in 1991 with my medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Afterwards, I did my residency in Internal Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.

After residency, I took my first job at a large medical practice in my hometown of Tifton, GA. I had a very rewarding practice there but felt that my real opportunity to help others and make a difference would lie in a larger community with more avenues to search for those that really needed me.

I then joined an Internal Medical practice in Augusta, GA, where I had spent my 4 years in medical school and had deep roots in a church there and in the community. Although I had a great practice in Augusta also, I still felt as if there was something else God wanted me to do. Eventually I ended up as a Hospitalist in the largest Burn Center in the United States, right here in Augusta, GA! This has been my passion for the last 10 years, helping those scarred both physically, and even more so, emotionally by their severe burn wounds. This truly has been a way for me to apply my knowledge and deep compassion for those that are hurting.

Unfortunately, despite the great reward of being able to work with these types of patients, I had become frustrated with the ability of traditional medicine to truly address their emotional needs that resulted from their trauma. It was at this point that God brought Nick Davis into my life.

We had decided to sell our current home, and despite Nick and his family living in NH, he saw the ad for our home and came down to visit. I saw at that time the deep passion that he has for helping anyone with these types of trauma. I have experienced this personally as Nick has helped free me from my own trauma that was keeping me full of anxiety and preventing me from living my life to the fullest. Nick introduced me to his family and to Dan Jarvis who also has Nick’s passion for this work. I finally know what God has been preparing me for all of my life!

As far as my family, I am married to Melissa and we have 6 children between us. My oldest son Jon recently graduated from medical school. My oldest daughter Caroline is married and applying for PA school this year. My next daughter Isabelle starts Nursing School this fall and my youngest son Graham is a senior in high school. They are all wonderful, giving children that I hope will pursue a life of helping others also.

To finish, I look forward to being a part of your organization as you serve and minister to those that have served our country and given their all for us. It’s the least we can do for them.

Johnny Walker, Ground Zero First Responder from "HEALING THE HEROES OF 9-11" Documentary

Mon, 11 Sep 2023 11:00:00 -0400

Healing the Heroes of 9-11: The Way Forward

The Backstory of the Documentary

I always wanted to do a Documentary Film on 9/11 and show the work we do to let people know they can heal PTSD and depression.  It took a back burner for quite a while, then a survivor of 9/11 came through and healed their trauma from that day, rekindling the fire inside.  It was 2021, and I contacted Michael Gier of Gier Productions, LLC.  I met Michael a few years ago when he interviewed me for the film "Wounded Heroes." I phoned Michael and asked his thoughts on filming for 22ZERO, a Documentary called "Healing the Heroes of 9-11: The Way Forward."?  Michael had a quick response.  Sure, sure, when do you need it by?

My reply shocked him, "We'd like to have it available for the 20th anniversary of 9/11.  Michael said, "Dan, you realize it's July 9?" I was like, "Is that a problem?" Of course, I could not understand how much post-production work would be involved.  I spoke with our board of directors, who agreed it would be a great way to get our story out to the world.  We signed a contract with Michael, and just like that, we started.

I contacted Westgate Resorts, Mark Waltrip, specifically their Chief Operations Officer.  He connected us with the Westgate Foundation, a philanthropic organization controlled by Westgate Resorts.  Westgate Foundation provided free lodging and interview facilities in their Manhattan Hotel.  Westgate Foundation provided a huge contribution to the cause.

I was freaking out about paying for the entire project, and low and behold, the intention was set, and the funds came in to pay for the project down to the penny.  This film was meant to be.  Michael began preparing the project, looking for first responders to interview, scheduled flights to NYC, and quickly, the project was underway.  I will say Michael is not only super professional but efficient.  I can't begin to fathom how much hard work he put into the project.  Michael made the deadline a reality; we went live on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

The biggest issue was for the 20th-anniversary launch, we had a new problem.  A catastrophic failure of command at levels we have never witnessed before.  The withdrawal from Afghanistan impeded the launch as we were doing our public relations; interviews were not to promote the film; it shifted.  We know that veterans took their lives in the quake of failure.  The word needed to get out there was a solution for their emotions.  Many men and women reached out after watching interviews in different markets; they were assessed and placed with peer coaches at 22ZERO, starting their healing journey.

Men and women are still struggling from 9/11 and the Afghanistan withdrawal.  I know this from personal experience regarding the failure of command in Afghanistan; recently, my emotions started getting overwhelmed, and I couldn't figure out why.  Not until a client from Anxiety Guys, our civilian for-profit, texted me.  She said, "I know veterans are having a difficult time at the moment; I just wanted you to know I was thinking about you." I was scratching my head; what is she talking about?  Then, it hit me like a sack of bricks—the anniversary of the withdrawal.  I associated my mind with the television drama unfolding in September 2021.  Witnessing 13 Americans killed because the Commander on the ground refused to allow guards to stop the suicide bomber with positive ID from two independent sources.  The bomber should have been stopped, and the 13 Americans should still be alive with their families—reckless abandon of command, which goes to the top with POTUS.

"I've Dealt With That"

Tue, 08 Aug 2023 16:00:00 -0400

What’s the difference between consciously and subconsciously “dealing with it?” Nick and Dan discuss how this affects how the mind can heal from trauma and traumatic events.

One may say that they've dealt with an experience, but actually DEALING with an experience is the only way to induce real healing. We discuss the brain's natural healing power through neuroplasticity, but also how overcoming subconscious trauma can feel like fighting off a super-human.

Finally, we talk about examples of where we have worked with people that were dealing with their trauma and how those people got to see the difference after experiencing the mental margarita.

Let's get over it, we are all on the same team with Dr. Frank Ochberg

Wed, 28 Jun 2023 11:00:00 -0400

This episode will be part one of many with Dr. Frank Ochberg, a pioneer in the field of PTSD.  Dr. Ochberg is a Psychiatrist trained at Harvard and Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Ochberg was an editor to the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual (DSM) in the 1980s labeling PTSD for the very first time.  It finally had a name, however, he knew the label did a disservice to veterans and others because of the stigma that is attached. He has been on a mission to rename it PTSI ever since.

Dr. Ochberg established the very first International Society for Stress Studies (ISTSS)  https://istss.org/awards-and-honors/past-frank-ochberg-award-winners

ISTSS Mission

ISTSS is an international interdisciplinary professional organization that promotes advancement and exchange of knowledge about traumatic stress.

This knowledge includes:

  • Understanding the scope and consequences of traumatic exposure,
  • Preventing traumatic events and ameliorating their consequences, and
  • Advocating for the field of traumatic stress.

Dr. Ochberg developed the counting method for PTSD, you can see the link below.  Dan and Nick conducted the interview with eager anticipation.  This episode is more of the personal life and history of Dr. Ochberg.  More to follow.
